Requirements

• Provide mentoring and education in cancer care and in clinical and translational investigation for medical students, residents, fellows and other healthcare professionals at UNM Hospital, the UNMCCC and our community partners, both informally and through the formal mentorship programs within the Department of OB/GYN

• Actively participate in fellow, resident and medical student training including full participation in ACGME requirements to achieve full accreditation in good standing and work collectively with the division faculty to continue to grow the fellowship with enhanced national reputation including participation in education and competency committees, journal clubs, tumor board and other formal education venues.

• Contribute to the team effort in the continued building of a strong nationally recognized Division of Gynecologic Oncology within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the UNMCCC that provides outstanding clinical care and research opportunities for patients with gynecologic cancers in the state of New Mexico in all our practice sites (present and future). Integrate with support services and other clinical providers and services to achieve optimal multidisciplinary patient care.

• Serve as a respected consultant to UNM and community providers in matters of gynecologic oncology, complex gynecology and surgical emergencies, and obstetrical surgical based emergencies.

• Staff at minimum 2 full days of clinic per week (4 half-day sessions) at UNMCCC and/or outreach clinics collectively and provide faculty coverage of clinics during respective annual or professional leave. Outpatient clinics will include new patient visits for new cancer diagnoses, gynecologic oncology second opinion consultations, perioperative management, and complex gynecology consultation, chemotherapy management prioritizing clinical trial enrollment, pre-invasive disease management and survivorship care. Your expected patient flow will be approximately 20 minutes for follow-up and 60 minutes for new patients. It is expected that UNM providers will see at minimum 20 patients per day in the outpatient clinics once you are comfortable with the transition to faculty and meet standards reviewed by the Division Chief. You may be asked to staff Santa Fe clinics as outreach as well as fellow’s clinic coverage.  Flexibility in clinic coverage is expected of all Division faculty members to maintain clinical operations without disruptions.

• Staff the in-patient service one week at a time at a near equal distribution between all Gynecologic Oncology faculty which will be based on the number of faculty in the Division at all times. Inpatient duties require daily morning rounds (including weekends) with the team where patients are evaluated by the faculty and the plan set in place. End of day rounds are done by phone or in person depending on the acuity of the patient care needs. The on-service faculty member is on call 24/7 and available for PALS consultation, transfers, operative emergencies or any other acute patient care need. Equal distribution of call assignments and holiday schedules will be made and determined based on the full composition of faculty within the division of Gynecologic Oncology.

• Operate on average at least one full day a week within the Gynecologic Oncology blocked schedule (Mon, Tues, and Wed) in the main OR. Outpatient surgical cases will be managed at the outpatient surgical center (OSIS) on availability. OR needs assessment for greater or different blocked time will be managed as needed. Surgical services at other locations (such as Christus St. Vincent’s) may be an opportunity based on future negotiations that may be in place at or after your matriculation to UNM.

• Develop and optimize newer surgical technologies such as sentinel node technology for uterine and cervical cancer, fertility-sparing surgery and other divisional needs to maximize fellowship training.

• Actively participate in the Gynecologic Oncology Clinical Working group and actively assess incoming trials under consideration for our patients. Serve as an institutional PI for appropriate cooperative group and pharma trials after full training in clinical research and work towards developing an investigator initiated trial or process improvement trial aligned with your developing research interests inclusive of your global health initiative.

• Serve as needed on any administrative committees of the UNMCCC, Department of OB/GYN or the UNM SOM.

• Take part in all activities of the Division of Gynecologic Oncology and the key activities of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology including weekly Tumor Board, monthly Division Meetings, Grand Rounds when not in Santa Fe clinic, Morbidity and Mortality (M+M) Conference, Visiting Professorship Series, Resident Research Day, Fellowship review requirements, Journal club, Fellow research review, OB/GYN faculty meetings and UNMCCC meetings and retreats.

• Because of the clinical/translational requirements of the UNMCCC, 12 days of professional leave are allowed for scientific meetings, additional education, review committees and speaking engagements annually.  Additional professional leave may be obtained by providing the Division Chief and the Chair of the Department with a written rationale for leave that explains the benefits to UNM. Support for attendance at additional meetings where you are presenting original work is available on request from the UNMCCC. It is expected that all clinics that will be missed for leave (including annual and professional leave) will be covered by one of the division faculty either on that day or through patient redistribution so that patient care will not be interrupted.  Your UNM contract requires that any changes in clinic schedule be approved 30 days or more in advance. Cancellation of clinics without coverage or redistribution of patients is discouraged and all efforts of coverage should be exhausted and as such is discussed with the Division Chief. Emergent or urgent events such as illness or family issues are unplanned and are not subject to the 30-day notice. Coverage will be provided by the faculty or midlevel staff in the event of an urgent need.

• Expectations of successful completion of written and oral ABOG Board exams for both general OB/GYN and Gyn Onc subspecialty Board in a timely manner.  Once successfully Boarded, maintenance of certification (MOC) is required annually to retain active faculty practice privileges.
