Michigan State University Center for Counseling & Psychiatric Services (CAPS) provides a wide range of mental health services for students on campus, including and not limited to: screening/triage appointments, individual and group therapy, psychiatric services, outreach and multicultural engagement, clinical care coordination, intensive integrated clinical services, and hospitalization coordination and support. MSU is a large university with many resources and excellent benefits for employees; the CAPS department is undergoing a significant period of growth and expansion at this time, including an expansion of our crisis response capacity.
The social worker/counselor supporting this unit will work closely with staff and administrators in the Intensive Clinical Services Unit (https://caps.msu.edu/services/icsu.html), Clinical Coordination/Care Management Unit, and the CAPS Screening/Triage System to ameliorate the impact of student mental health crises. As part of a multidisciplinary health team, they will communicate with other staff members to establish appropriate plans of care. They will provide mental health screening/triage services, clinical crisis and short-term stabilization services, facilitate collaboration between providers and on-/off-campus agencies, provide recommendations for level of care for students in need of stabilization and ongoing services, administer and interpret limited assessment measures, utilize and offer suggestions for programs and services focused on crisis stabilization. When clinically-indicated during a mental health emergency, they will accompany students to the emergency room to support continuity of care, advocate for students and/or their families, carry small caseload of patients for ongoing treatment, and facilitate discharge planning; they may visit patients or families in hospital settings. The successful candidate will assist in responding to campus crises, engage with administration in our professional collaboration with hospital services, establish and maintain referral relationships with community treatment providers, and demonstrate a commitment to multiculturalism and serving underrepresented/underserved populations.
