The Pharmacy Director-Children’s and Women’s Hospitals position at Michigan Medicine (MM) provides pharmacy leadership to the health system ensuring operational effectiveness within the pediatric pharmacies. The position will be leading this department in planning, organization, and ensuring clinical and drug distribution services are provided in accordance with MM policies and procedures, standards of practice based on alignment with national organizations, and state/federal laws.
The C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital are a 12 story, 348 bed combined hospital that opened in December 2011. The hospital is consistently ranked as one of the top hospitals in the country by U.S. News & World Report, and is also ranked as the top Children’s Hospital in Michigan in every category evaluated. The Pediatric Cardiology and Heart Surgery is consistently nationally recognized, and the hospital is a level 1 Children’s Surgery Center verified by the American College of Surgeons.
Pharmacy Services are state of the art, including a stand-alone pediatric emergency service covered by a dedicated pharmacist 24/7/365. The pharmacy areas are well-designed and constructed with newly renovated sterile compounding areas. Clinical services include pharmacokinetic dosing and monitoring; anticoagulation dosing, monitoring, and transitions of care services; renal dosing; code blue response; nutrition services; and bacteremia management in addition to standard clinical intervention and order verification services. The team dispenses over 700,000 doses per year and provides clinical services to over 8000 patients per year.
The Children’s and Women’s (CW) Pharmacy is comprised of several core teams, including Pediatric Critical Care, General Pediatrics, Operating Room Services, and the Pharmacy Clean Room team. The team is comprised of over 30 clinical pharmacists and nearly 50 pharmacy technicians with a leadership team that includes Pharmacist Clinical and Distribution Area Leads, Technicians Supervisors, and Pharmacy Managers.
As a direct report to the Associate Chief Pharmacy Officer the Pharmacy Director-Children’s and Women’s Hospitals will provide direction to front-line pharmacy managers in the pediatric inpatient pharmacies. The Pharmacy Director-Children’s and Women’s Hospital will ensure services and processes at inpatient pharmacy sites are standardized with regards to quality, safety, and efficiency. In this role, the Pharmacy Director- Children’s and Women’s will represent pharmacy to internal stakeholders at the director level within the inpatient pediatric and women’s care settings. The Pharmacy Director-Children’s and Women’s Hospitals will ensure metrics are measured by front-line managers to measure the Department of Pharmacy services performance. The position will be responsible for oversight of the budget in the Children’s and Women’s care areas and explain any variances in medication costs and/or human resources labor costs.
In accordance with the mission and vision of the Chief Pharmacy Officer (CPO), the Pharmacy Director-Children’s and Women’s Hospitals will provide leadership and direction to the front-line managers within the inpatient care areas. The managers of the pediatric inpatient pharmacies will report to the Pharmacy Director-Children’s and Women’s Hospitals. The Pharmacy Director-Children’s and Women’s Hospitals will be responsible for identifying opportunities for new pharmacy services and programs. The position will also have corporate-wide responsibilities as assigned.
The person in this position will serve on the department’s Pharmacy Executive Council and be expected to assume the lead role and responsibility for department-wide activities and initiatives as assigned by the CPO.
The Pharmacy Director-Children’s and Women’s Hospitals will also serve as an adjunct faculty member in the University of Michigan College of Pharmacy. The Pharmacy Director-Children’s and Women’s Hospitals will be responsible for course material related to health-system pharmacy administration and will provide rotational opportunities to pharmacy students.
Education: Doctor of Pharmacy degree required - Residency (or equivalent experience) required - advanced business degree (ex. MBA, MHA, MS) preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Current license to practice as a Pharmacist in the State of Michigan – or eligible
Experience: at least 5 years of progressively responsible health-system pharmacy leadership in an academic medical center; involvement in the training of pharmacy students and residents. Experience is preferably in the acute care pharmacy practice area.

Extensive knowledge of medication safety procedures and current trends in contemporary pharmacy service provision
Extensive knowledge of regulatory board requirements in contemporary pharmacy service provision
Ability to recruit and retain highly skilled professional and technical staff
Knowledgeable about the pharmaceutical supply chain, clinical therapeutics, human resources management, and budget management
Ability to implement the strategic vision and plan for pharmacy services
Proven leadership skills in relationship to motivating and empowering managers and staff
Track record of collaboration and effective partnerships with internal stakeholders including: physicians, nurses, hospital administrators and others
Success in developing and enhancing the skills of leadership and professional staff
Demonstrated decision-making skills
