The PGY2 Pain Management & Palliative Care Pharmacy Residency at the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS) is a one-year specialty residency designed to prepare a pharmacist to practice as a pain management and/or palliative care Clinical Pharmacy Specialist. The SFVAHCS PGY2 Pain Management & Palliative Care pharmacy residency program is currently in candidate accreditation status.
The San Francisco VA Health Care System is a comprehensive network that provides health services to Veterans through the San Francisco VA Medical Center (SFVAMC) and six community-based outpatient clinics in Santa Rosa, Eureka, Ukiah, Clearlake, San Bruno and downtown San Francisco. It has a long history of conducting cutting-edge research, establishing innovative medical programs, and providing compassionate care to Veterans. SFVAMC has 124 operating beds and a 120-bed Community Living Center. The SFVAHCS Pharmacy Service is a progressive department with over 110 employees, including 81 pharmacists. The Pharmacy Service has a formal affiliation with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), University of the Pacific (UOP), Chapman University and Touro University Schools of Pharmacy.
The PGY2 Pain Management & Palliative Care Residency Program includes training alongside a variety of multidisciplinary pain management, addiction medicine, and palliative care teams. Clinical competency and expertise will be achieved through direct patient care opportunities within the inpatient and ambulatory care settings. Core rotations include: chronic pain clinic, integrated pain team, inpatient palliative care consult service, hospice, substance use disorder clinic, perioperative pain management clinic, inpatient surgery, home-based primary care, and movement disorder clinic. Longitudinal experiences include: palliative care clinic, residency project, Opioid Safety Initiative Committee, and an elective teaching certificate.

The main San Francisco VA Medical Center is a tertiary care facility authorized for 124 acute hospital beds. A 120-bed nursing home provides extended care services to veterans. Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) provide primary care and some specialty services to veterans throughout Northern California.
The Pharmacy Service is a progressive department with over 120 employees, including 80 pharmacists. Computerized provider order entry is utilized in all settings, bar code recognition technology is in place for verification and documentation of medication administration, and the patient medical record is fully integrated and available online.
The Pharmacy Service has automation for many of its dispensing activities. The Inpatient Pharmacy provides 24-hour distribution services. The Outpatient Pharmacy fills 800,000 prescriptions per year.
