At Providence Sacred Heart Anticoagulation and Pharmacotherapy Clinic, we strongly believe in the effectiveness of patient-centered, clinical pharmacy practice; it is a philosophy that is supported across the Providence organization. The purpose of the PGY1 pharmacy residency program is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certifications, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Post-Graduate Year 1 Residency Program
Our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency is designed to meet the requirements outlined by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. Residents receive training and experience in clinical, administrative, and distributive pharmacy. Each resident completes a project related to pharmacy practice. Our affiliation with Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences offers numerous academic opportunities.
The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency offers the benefit of a unique training program. The wide variety of rotations and learning experiences within the ambulatory setting is a strength of our program. Required transplant and obstetrics experiences produce a well-rounded graduate by offering residents an opportunity to follow patients during admission at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and Children’s Hospital. Everything you learn about pharmacy practice will be based in our patient-centered mission of providing compassionate care.
Staffing requirements provide hands-on experience which exposes residents to real-life clinical and operational situations. Upon successful completion of the first clinical rotation residents will begin staffing in the clinic. Staffing shifts will become more diverse as the resident progresses through their rotations. A strong commitment to patient care and clinical orientation/training along with ongoing support ensure successful staffing experiences.
You’ll Be Trained in One of Washington’s Leading Clinics
The Providence Sacred Heart Anticoagulation and Pharmacotherapy Clinic offers a full range of clinical services and has been recognized as a National Center of Excellence for Anticoagulation and our sister clinic in North Spokane is recognized as a Joint Commission Best Practice site. The clinic’s scope offers numerous opportunities for learning how to manage a wide variety of disease states.
You’ll Be Part of a Progressive Pharmacy Team
Our commitment to patient care has clinical pharmacists providing services to a wide group of patients. The pharmacists are relied on as a valuable member of the care team. Pharmacists provide oversight and input in medication therapy by participating in profile review and intervention, dosing protocols, drug information, clinic & medical staff education, committee participation and protocol development. These longstanding practices have resulted in excellent relationships with our community, medical, and nursing staffs.
The clinical pharmacy services provide the basis for a wide variety of rotations. Under the direct supervision of their pharmacist preceptor, residents are actively engaged in each aspect of the care carried out by the pharmacy team.
Expand Your Pharmacy Leadership Skills
Residents will complete a quality improvement project related to a particular aspect of pharmacy practice, which will span the length of their residency and provide numerous opportunities to develop leadership skills. Projects focus on areas of need which ensures appropriate level of support for successful completion. During the pharmacy administration rotation, the resident will work with leaders to develop and improve processes; and attend department, hospital and system meetings.
