WellSpan York Hospital's PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program offers the opportunity to develop specialty pharmaceutical care skills in both medical, trauma, surgical, neuroscience, cardiac, open heart and neonatal intensive care unit patients. The preceptors are experienced and dedicated practitioners who ensure competence, build confidence and instill responsibility for drug therapy outcomes in the setting of our most complex patients.
WellSpan York Hospital features a Level 1 trauma center and a total of 60 intensive care unit beds including medical, trauma, surgical, neuroscience, cardiac, and open heart units. In addition, residents will gain experience in our 44 bed Level 3 neonatal intensive care unit. Interdisciplinary rounds with medical residents, surgical residents and critical care attendings create an ideal environment for pharmacy involvement with patient care activities.
The PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency is a one-year practice experience. The program was accredited by ASHP in 2001 with subsequent reaccreditation in 2013 and 2019 (awarded maximum 8 year reaccreditation). The emphasis of our program is on providing rational and cost-effective drug therapy in a community teaching hospital through the provision of clinical pharmacy services in the ICU setting. Our goal is to provide opportunity for professional growth and the development of a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist in Critical Care.
The purpose of the PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program at WellSpan York Hospital is to build on Doctor of Pharmacy education and PGY1 pharmacy residency program experience to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists in specialized areas of practice. PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program provides residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency Program are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification.
Upon completion of this residency program, pharmacists will be assertive, ethical professionals with a commitment to pharmaceutical care and the profession of pharmacy. They will be skilled providers of pharmaceutical care and educators of patients and health care professionals on drug related topics. They will become content experts, valued members of a healthcare team who take personal responsibility for achieving optimal patient outcomes by monitoring and documenting their impact on patient care in the critical care setting.
