An excellent learning experience at a nationally recognized health plan delivering comprehensive services and innovative programs. Rotations include patient care, case management, formulary and UM, pharmacy administration, client consulting, pharmacy operations, major project, teaching/precepting, and professional association management (at AMCP). Elective rotations, opportunities for projects and publication available including collaboration with University of Washington Pharmaceutical Outcomes Research faculty, Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER) and Premera pharmacy leaders. Staffing requirement 15 hours/week for pharmacist clinical review of complex PA requests.
Premera is primarily an employer group insurer. Clients include several well-known national accounts as well as local companies. Individual plans are also offered on the Washington and Alaska health insurance exchanges. Premera also offers a Medicare plan. The main campus is 10 miles north of downtown Seattle and the University of Washington.
Patient care rotations will be at one of our network medical group partners. One rotation will be at AMCP headquarters in Virginia.
U.S. Citizenship or permanent residency is required; sponsorship is not offered. PharmD (current or 2020 candidate in an ACPE accredited program), transcripts, CV, Letter of Interest, 3 letters of recommendation, Licensure by end of September and PhORCAS submission.

Residency Program Director: John B Watkins, PharmD, MPH, BCPS, is the Pharmacy Manager for Formulary Development at Premera Blue Cross in Mountlake Terrace, WA and is also an Affiliate Professor of Pharmacy at the University of Washington, Seattle, WA. After graduating from the University of Washington and working as a community pharmacist, he served as a hospital pharmacy director, medical supplies director, and pharmacology instructor in Kathmandu, Nepal. He completed a combined MPH degree in Pharmacy and Health Services at the University of Washington with a res...idency at Group Health Cooperative, where he later worked as a clinical and drug information pharmacist. Before working at Premera, he was an Associate Pharmacy Director at Regence BlueShield. He is a member of the AMCP Format Executive Committee and the ISPOR North American HTA Council. His areas of interest include health policy, health technology assessment and application of evidence-based medicine, personalized medicine, economics and bioethics to formulary and coverage decision making processes.
