Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple (BSWMC-T) is a 636-bed tertiary care, teaching facility located in Temple, Texas. Founded in 1904, our hospital also includes the Baylor Scott & White Clinic in Temple, multiple regional clinics throughout Central Texas, and over 200,000-member health plan. BSWMC-T is part of Baylor Scott & White Health network spanning across Texas and is a Level 1 Trauma Center. BSWMC-T serves as a major teaching site for The University of Texas at Austin College of Pharmacy and the Texas A&M University Rangel College of Pharmacy and College of Medicine.
The BSWMC-T Pharmacy Department provides progressive, clinically oriented pharmacy services for the hospital, clinic, and health plan. Included among the major departmental functions are 24-hour inpatient pharmacy services, home infusion services, anticoagulation, diabetes and dyslipidemia management clinics and a wide range of services provided by BSWMC-T clinical pharmacists and clinical specialists.
In addition to provision of a wide array of patient care services, the Department of Pharmacy has a significant teaching/research presence within the institution. A major element of the departmental teaching mission involves offering both pharmacy practice and post-doctoral specialty residency training opportunities. Our resident focuses on the comprehensive care of patients through evaluation and intervention of medication orders, interdisciplinary rounding, antimicrobial stewardship, education and research. This unique residency provides additional opportunities through oncology electives and research in the oncology population. The resident may not exceed one-third of residency in the oncology population.
Purpose: This PGY1 pharmacy residency program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
The resident divides their year between clinical rotations and patient care pharmacist responsibilities. The combination of training and practice responsibilities provide a blend of experience for highly motivated individual with a significant interest in hospital pharmacy practice who are beginning their professional careers. The resident completes 13 four-week rotations during the residency year. This resident may not exceed one-third of their experiences in a specific disease state or population (e.g. oncology). Staffing responsibilities vary depending on the rotation. Residents generally work every third weekend and one holiday. Opportunities are also available for collaborative oncology research and oncology teaching experiences for the resident. For those interested in teaching, an academic training program for residents is offered.
