Valleywise Health (formerly Maricopa Integrated Health System) provides services to over 70,000 culturally diverse members of Maricopa County. Within the health system, the Department of Pharmacy provides services to a 325-bed full-service teaching hospital (Valleywise Health Medical Center), 289 acute care psychiatric beds (Valleywise Behavioral Health Centers in Mesa, Phoenix, and Maryvale), 30 bed Adult and Pediatric Emergency Department (Valleywise Health Maryvale Emergency), and twelve outpatient clinics. The PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Practice Residency offered by Valleywise Health is focused on adult and pediatric emergency medicine, trauma care, and burn care at Valleywise Health Medical Center (VHMC).
The Department of Pharmacy has a pharmacy team consisting of an Adult Internal Medicine Specialist, a Medical Intensive Care Specialist, a Surgical Intensive Care Specialist, a Burn Intensive Care Specialist, an Infectious Diseases Specialist, a Pediatric Specialist, two Emergency Medicine Specialists, an Ambulatory Care Pharmacist, Internal Medicine Clinical Pharmacists, and a Clinical Pharmacist at one of the psychiatric care areas.
Core rotations include orientation, two Adult Emergency Medicine, two Trauma, two Pediatric Emergency Medicine, one Burn Intensive Care, and one Toxicology rotation. In addition, the resident will participate in several longitudinal experiences including Research, Toxicology, Staffing, and Pharmacy Practice Management. The resident will have the opportunity to select additional elective experiences including infectious diseases, surgical intensive care, medical intensive care, burn emergency care, psychiatry, and electives of the core rotations. Additional elective rotations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Concentrated learning experiences in Emergency Medical Services, Precepting, Case Presentation, Continuing Education Presentation, Drug Class Review/Formulary Addition Request, and Medication Use Evaluation will be assigned.
There is one PGY2 Emergency Medicine Resident position available for the 2020-2021 program year.
Candidates must have graduated from an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited Doctor of Pharmacy program and they must be participating in, or have completed, an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency program. Candidates must be eligible for licensure by the Arizona Board of Pharmacy. Residents are expected to be licensed by August 1, 2020. Residents must provide PGY1 Residency Certificate of Completion within the first week of the residency year.
