| This community-based pharmacy residency develops change agents who successfully integrate patient centered care into today’s pharmacy practice. Program graduates will develop the necessary skills and motivation to create and manage sustainable patient care programs as well as educate patients, other health care providers, and future practitioners. Program graduates will demonstrate commitment to the profession by acting as innovative practice leaders in their communities. Residency Program Purpose Statement This residency program builds upon the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to develop community-based pharmacist practitioners with diverse patient care, leadership, and education skills who are eligible to pursue advanced training opportunities including postgraduate year two (PGY2) residencies and professional certifications. Practice Areas - Diabetes Management - Assist Balls Food Stores employees with diabetes in successfully self-managing their disease by providing intensive education on self-monitoring blood glucose, getting appropriate lab tests and vaccines, adhering to prescribed medication regimens and setting goals for healthier lifestyle behaviors.
- Immunizations - Develop, implement, and market resident-managed flu clinics in Hen House and Price Chopper Pharmacies and off site clinics in the community, participate in the vaccine clinic for patients traveling abroad (travel vaccine clinic) and participate in additional vaccination opportunities including shingles, pneumococcal, pertussis and Hepatitis B.
- Cardiovascular Disease Management - Assist employees with cardiovascular disease in successfully self-managing their disease by providing intensive education and communicate with the patient’s physician regarding labs, referrals, and therapeutic recommendations.
- Pharmacy Management – 6-week rotation - Gain an understanding of key pharmacy business markers, demonstrate knowledge of profitability, create marketing strategies, understand pharmacy managerial functions and develop a basic understanding of human resource management. The resident will be exposed to data analysis and business skill development specific to the needs of the resident’s home site and will create and present a business plan for a new or enhanced pharmacy service.
- Corporate Pharmacy Leadership Rotation - Become familiar with key leadership principles and organizational management strategies for a regional chain. The resident will be exposed to reputable leadership tools and resources through monthly topic discussions with preceptors and will participate in active learning to improve their personal leadership while gaining experience in leading practice advancement initiatives within the chain.
- Teaching/Precepting - Provide a formal approach to precepting advanced pharmacy practice experience (APPE) students in the community pharmacy setting and expose the resident to the roles and responsibilities of a preceptor. The resident will also gain experience with lecturing in a classroom setting (didactic lecturing) at the University of Kansas School of Pharmacy. A Teaching and Learning Curriculum Program for Pharmacists (Teaching Certificate Program) is available for those residents with a teaching interest.
- Medication Therapy Management - Provide a formal and organized approach to medication therapy management (MTM), including personal provision of MTM services as well as managing staff providing MTM services at additional pharmacies. The resident will follow the steps of the Pharmacists’ Patient Care Process (collect, assess, plan, implement, monitor/evaluate) to create patient care plans in collaboration with other providers.
- Wellness Screenings - Effectively manage the biometric screening program for Balls Foods Stores. There are several components to this experience including: screening events, physical assessment instruction, and screenings by appointment.
- Practice Based Research – Gain experience in developing, implementing, managing, presenting and completing a research project. The project, identified by the resident, must be timely, applicable to Balls Food Stores and completed within the residency year. The project will be presented at a national meeting and at the Midwest Pharmacy Residency Conference in May. A final manuscript must be prepared and submitted to a journal prior to completion of the residency.
- Ambulatory Care Lipid Clinic - Serve as a pharmacy provider in a clinic specializing in the treatment and prevention of atherosclerosis and hypercholesterolemia at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Clinic providers treat most cardiovascular risk factors, with a focus on cholesterol.
- Ambulatory Care Geriatrics Clinic – 8 week rotation - serve as a provider in a team based approach to geriatric care at the University of Kansas Medical Center.

Residency Director: Janelle Ruisinger, PharmD – KU School of Pharmacy Residency Specifics: Staffing Requirements: Each resident is required to staff an average of about 10 hours per week at their specific store for the duration of the residency - this includes weekday and weekend staffing commitments. Projects/Presentations: Each resident is required to complete a practice related research project. This project will be submitted as a poster presentation to the APhA Annual Meeting and presented as a podium presentation at the Midwest Pharmacy Residency Conference in May.
