The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Emory Decatur Hospital is a 12 month program in an acute care community hospital setting. The primary emphasis of the program is on training pharmacists who are competent and confident in providing pharmaceutical care to a broad patient population with a variety of disease states to prepare them for clinical positions in acute care settings or for pursuing further specialized training in a PGY2 residency program. Our residents are trained to function as integral members of the multidisciplinary patient care team and to provide education for other healthcare professionals, patients, and the community on drug-related topics and safe medication use. Our residents demonstrate professional maturity by showing self-initiation in dealing with practice-related problems, by self-monitoring their work, and by being committed to the advancement of the profession. Required learning experiences include Pharmacy Orientation, Pharmacokinetics/General Clinical Orientation, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Neonatology, Nutrition Support, Oncology, Emergency Medicine, Pharmacy Practice Management, and Drug Policy Development. Opportunities to earn a teaching certificate and work with IPPE and APPE pharmacy students are available. Completion of a residency research project is required. Elective experiences are available in Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship, Pharmacy Informatics, Investigational Drug Service, and Outpatient Oncology.
