The social worker functions as an integral member of the psychiatry consultation –liaison team. Interdisciplinary collaboration is central to role. Social worker works with medical social workers, medical personnel and psychiatry staff and faculty on 9C, PES, and ambulatory. The social worker sometimes joins the CL team on rounds, meets with patient and occasionally family member, may provide brief interventions to patient. Most often the social worker makes recommendations about after-care. These recommendations can involve discharge planning and referrals to ambulatory clinics. Oftentimes, the patient requires psychiatric hospitalization and the social worker will facilitate transfers, working with insurance companies and connecting with receiving hospitals.

This position requires knowledge and experience dealing with acute crises and assessing psychiatric illness and substance abuse. The job is fast-paced and requires a sophisticated ability to negotiate on behalf of patient to arrange aftercare. The social worker should be knowledgeable about MI in order to help a patient accept recommendation for substance abuse treatments or other psychiatric care.

You will be responsible for:
Meeting with patient and family as needed to arrange discharge plans
Coordinating and facilitating transfers to other psychiatric hospitals.
Working with insurance plans to make the transfers
A Master's degree in Social Work from a school accredited by the Council of Social Work Education.
A current license to practice social work in the State of Michigan.
Previous experience with medical and mental health social work.
Knowledge about psychiatric diagnoses and resources.
Skilled in developing rapport and effectively communicating with a diverse patient population.
Efficient, accurate assessment of patient needs and effective case dispositions.
Effective organizational skills, flexibility, self-motivation, the ability to effectively prioritize multiple competing tasks in a dynamic medical clinic.
Independent, sound decision-making is necessary for success in this position.
Effective collaboration with a large multi-disciplinary team.
Proficiency in keeping accurate and timely clinical records by computer.
Experience with evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions (e.g., CBT, PST, ACT, DBT) and familiarity with brief, structured interventions (e.g., Motivational Interviewing, Behavioral Activation) along with a basic knowledge of psychopharmacology.
Knowledge of community resources for psychiatric illness and substance abuse.
Ability to facilitate transfers to psychiatric hospitals.
This is full time, 40 hour/week position. The typical schedule is Monday-Friday with start and end times 8:00-4:30.
This position may be underfilled at a lower classification depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate. Advancement through the career ladder at the Expert or Clinical Scholar Level is required for placement in the MSW Senior Classification
