The cardiology specialty residency provides interdisciplinary experiences for a wide range of disease states and practice settings. The foundation is built around general cardiology, cardiovascular intensive care, heart transplant, cardiothoracic surgery (ICU and step-down), and clinic experiences. The resident will be integrated into pharmacy driven hospital services such as the on-call program, pharmacokinetics, and anticoagulation management. An interactive teaching environment allows residents to facilitate internal and external small group discussions, co-precept pharmacy students and PGY1 resident experiences, and present formal classroom lectures at an affiliated college of pharmacy. The optional teaching certificate program allows residents to learn innovative teaching methodologies and mentoring techniques from faculty which may be applied in the cardiac rehab education program for our patients, within the classroom setting, or during clinical bedside teaching. Residents will complete a clinical research project with the intent to present and publish their results. Upon completion, this program will prepare a cardiology specialty pharmacist to practice evidence-based medicine and apply that knowledge to patient care, experiential and didactic teaching, as well as research.
Doctor of Pharmacy degree and completion of a ASHP-accredited PGY1 Pharmacy Residency, eligibility for Illinois licensure and completed application via PhORCAS.
