The James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital, located in Tampa Florida, provides services to more than 116,000 Veterans. We are a teaching hospital, affiliated with the University of South Florida College of Medicine. James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital is the busiest of four polytrauma facilities in the nation. Pharmacists completing a residency program at the James A. Haley Veterans’ Hospital will be trained to provide patient centered care in multiple practice environments. The residency is designed to develop independent pharmacist clinicians, possessing clinical and distributive skills as you take responsibility for the total medication management of your patients. Graduates will demonstrate the ability to educate other health care professionals, patients and lay persons on medication-related subjects.
In your residency learning experiences, you will be expected to identify and solve drug-related problems as part of providing exceptional clinical patient care. Understanding many of these problems will require knowledge of the pharmacy service, including the inpatient and outpatient distribution systems. To be an effective resident, you must be able to function as a pharmacist within our health care system, processing and editing medication orders as appropriate to meet patient care needs. We prepare you for this responsibility in your clinical learning experiences by starting the residency year with a required learning experience in Orientation to Distribution and then continue with a required longitudinal learning experience in staffing. During this time you will work closely with senior pharmacists who will facilitate this transition from pharmacy student to pharmacist.
