The clinical social work provides services and continuity of care to clients/patients seen in the Howard County General Hospital Emergency Department. Psychiatric evaluation and diagnosis of psychiatric disorders and Substance Abuse Evaluations. Works with multi-disciplinary team in the Emergency Department to provide quality psychiatric service. Obtains all insurance authorizations necessary to treat patients. Is knowledgeable of Mental Health Resources in Maryland and proficient in formulating and implementing treatment and disposition plans Documents all clinical activity in accordance with Johns Hopkins, and State of Maryland regulations.
Responds in a timely manner to requests from the Emergency Department Physician for psychiatric consultations.
Performs psychiatric assessment, and formulated diagnosis.
Consult with referring physician to recommend,and completes appropriate disposition.
Discusses case with Attending Physician to determine if the patient has been cleared medically, and to determine why a consult is requested.
Provides requesting physician with results of assessment and disposition plan.
Reviews chart, and obtains all insurance authorizations before providing service to patient.
Contacts necessary insurance providers’ and obtain necessary authorizations needed tocomplete dispositions, and documents on chart.
Interview patient, and performs psychosocial assessment, mental status examination, and past psychiatric history.
Contacts family, or any collateral informants, to provide information necessary to complete an assessment.
Formulates an appropriate treatment/disposition plan for patient.
Develops knowledge base of Mental Health Service System necessary to make the most appropriate clinical disposition.
Effectively troubleshoots all systems when problems arise in effecting a clinically necessary disposition.
Verify all appropriate documentation is completed according to standards to carry out treatment/disposition plan.
Completes all contacts necessary to arrange for appropriate disposition of case, and independently resolves problems with complicated dispositions.
Be aware of time constraints of patient flow in the emergency department, and consistently evaluates all patients during shift.
Provides disposition status of patients to next shift staff member.
Works as a Team Member with all members of the Evening/ WeekendEmergency Consultation team.
Attend all Staff and administrative meetings as assigned.
Develops and maintains collegial working relationship with all ED Staff.
Provides documentation of all clinical and nonclinical activities.
Maintains client files in appropriate manner, and complies with Johns Hopkins accepted record keeping practices.
Charts are above 85% complete at chart reviews.
Knows and can implement all State of Maryland /Insurance/ and Federal mandated documentation.
Documents clinical assessment of all clients evaluated on the JHH Standard PES.
Evaluation form. Assessment information on PES has 95% completion rate.
Documents all activities according to standards
Master’s degree required. Education or an equivalent organization approved by the Council on Social Work Education.
Two (2) years related experience,
Pediatrics Experience preferred.
Emergency room experience preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration:
Licensure as an LCSW-C or LGSW required, and must maintain license throughout duration of employment.
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
Requires the knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts typically acquired through completion of a Master’s degree in Social Work.
Requires the analytical skills to resolve problems that require the use of basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
Requires the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.
