The WVU School of Pharmacy Community-Based Pharmacy Residency is a jointly sponsored one-year program whose goal is to develop leaders in community-based practice and to deliver advanced patient care in a community-based pharmacy settings through both longitudinal and concentrated experiences.
This multi-site residency program is conducted at five unique practice sites throughout West Virginia and Ohio including Morgantown, Charleston, and Moundsville, WV and Marietta, OH. Two sites are located at independent pharmacy sites and three sites are affiliated with Kroger.
The mission statement of the residency program is to produce a clinical pharmacist with academic and leadership skills to develop, implement and direct patient care services, manage a dispensing pharmacy, and integrate these roles to move the profession of pharmacy forward.
The residency shall provide the resident with training experiences and additional opportunities to meet this goal by providing the resident with:
1) Structured time with residency preceptors at her/his primary site as well as providing mentorship by senior Kroger, Moundsville Pharmacy, and Waterfront Family Pharmacy administration in clinical community pharmacy management;
2) Instruction and mentorship by WVU SOP faculty members in the areas of teaching and scholarship during designated time spent at the School and through; and,
3) Collaboration and time spent with other health care professionals, including physicians, through designated time in outpatient clinics through entities such as WVU Medicine, Chestnut Ridge Hospital, Marietta Memorial, Highland Hospital, and others.
The School’s vision is to create residency graduates who will advocate and implement change to make community pharmacist-delivered patient care and Medication Therapy Management (MTM) services a vital component in the health care system.
Valuable teaching experiences will be incorporated into the residency through a formal teaching certificate program. The residents provide instruction to didactic small group and large group pharmacy classes, and also co-precept Doctor of Pharmacy level students, other health care professionals, and the community at large. Residents provide and facilitate educational, wellness and disease state management and prevention programs within the community and surrounding areas. In addition, residents spend ½ day per week providing patient care in interdisciplinary outpatient clinics with opportunities in outpatient psychiatry and addictions clinics, Health Right free clinics, cardiology clinics and more. Each year, residents complete a community-based patient centered research project, to include the development, implementation, documentation, and presentation of results at a national meeting to professional colleagues. Unique residency experiences also include the opportunity to serve as medical staff volunteers at either WV's statewide summer camps for children with asthma or diabetes; advocacy visits to Capitol Hill; and up to 4 weeks of elective experiences from Alaska to Washington, DC. Finally, the residency program enables residents to acquire the operational and financial management skills which are needed to function in a contemporary community pharmacy setting at the completion of the residency, if desired.
The residency selection process involves a highly competitive written and face-to-face application process. Requirements for resident selection include:
Pharm.D. degree from an accredited School of Pharmacy
Eligibility for West Virginia pharmacist licensure prior to beginning of residency; additional Ohio licensure required for Kroger-Marietta resident
Application deadline is January 15 of the year in which the residency begins using PhORCAS
Resident applicants must be registered for the Match
Review of applications and rank order lists are compiled by the residency director with input from primary preceptors and corporate representatives from each residency site.
The residency does not accept early declaration to fill its slots.
