The Roger Lehecka Double Discovery Center (DDC) at Columbia College works with low-income and first-generation college bound youth between the ages 12 and 27 to ensure high school graduation, college access & enrollment, and college persistence & completion to support productive transition into responsible adulthood. A Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LMSW) is sought to serve as the Assistant Director, Healthy Minds & Bodies to will design, develop an implementation plan and monitor school-based and campus-based activities that strengthen students' physical, mental and social-emotional well-being, develop caregivers' capacity to better understand and support their children's well-being; train DDC staff/volunteers in how to build curriculum and programs that address student well-being; and build community across students, families, volunteers, and staff. The position reports to the Executive Director. THIS IS A GRANT-FUNDED POSITION. CONTINUED EMPLOYMENT IN THIS POSITION IS CONTINGENT UPON ONGOING SUFFICIENT FUNDING.
Research, design, and implement a series of effective social-emotional and physical health activities for students and parents, as part of DDC's campus-based and school-based Healthy Minds & Bodies programming.
Design and deliver the HMB: Relax, Relate, Release course for DDC students.
Provide direct oversight, coaching, and supervision of the social work interns from Columbia School of Social Work (CSSW) who work directly with students in providing case management, psychosocial education, mental health, and social-emotional learning services; and to the Expanded Learning Opportunities Coordinators (Columbia student workers).
Provide individual and family-based counseling and supportive consultations.
Ensure effective case management of individual counseling sessions for students, including the referral process and assisting students in obtaining additional social services as needed.
Build collaborative relationships with DDC staff/volunteers, school-based staff, community-based organizations, and university staff to design, develop, and monitor mentoring, leadership and community service opportunities that incorporate social-emotional learning and essential life skills to engage students in comprehensive programming to enhance their well-rounded development.
Train and instruct DDC staff on essential youth development, risk and resilience, social-emotional learning, social services, and mind-body principles so that all DDC programming reflects the core tenets of developing healthy students.
Design and implement DDC mentor training program; and provide training to families to increase their capacity to support their children's social-emotional wellness through the transition to college.
Oversee the administration of the Success Highways Risk/Resilience and College/Career Readiness assessments, including the analysis and response to data through programming.
Serve as DDC's Kinbassador and manage the effective utilization of the Kinvolved system, including data analysis and reporting to staff and families about student attendance in order to design and implement appropriate interventions.
Develop and implement a system to routinely collect and analyze student progress data across key learning objectives related to physical and social-emotional well-being.
Liaise with Double Discovery Student Organization to lead the development and implementation of all community building events for students and volunteers.
Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required. LMSW required.
2-3 years demonstrated experience in designing and implementing social-emotional and well-being programming for youth, preferably in NYC urban public schools.
Experience effectively managing referral and case management practices to ensure social-emotional and social service supports for young people.
Demonstrated understanding of positive youth development principles, risk and resilience, social-emotional learning, and the connection between physical and mental health.
Demonstrated understanding of unique challenges that urban youth from low-income and first generation college-bound families face in achieving academic and personal success, accessing higher education, and persisting.
Experience researching, designing, developing and implementing social-emotional programming for at-risk youth.
Experience monitoring the implementation of programming, including overseeing data collection processes, and adjusting program implementation to meet demonstrated needs.
Ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders, including youth, families, Columbia students, partner school staff, and university staff.
Demonstrated effective project management skills, including ability to take initiative, to be flexible, to manage multiple projects, and to prioritize competing and shifting demands/needs of stakeholders in a highly collaborative environment.
Demonstrated organizational, interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to clearly articulate complex concepts in writing and orally.
