This Pathologists' Assistant will be responsible for:
Under the direction of the Pathology Laboratory Manager and the Executive Director, processing of routine and complex specimens in the Surgical Cutting Room and Pathology Frozen Section Room.
Assisting with postmortem examinations in the morgue.
Gross specimen triage with staff pathologists and trainees and the dissection, dictation, and processing of all tissue specimens, including complex tumor resections, as per respective specimen protocol(s).
Other Surgical Pathology responsibilities include specimen photography, preparation of touch preparations and/or frozen sections for specimen triage, and the appropriate processing of tissue for special studies (cytogenetics, molecular, tissue banking, electron microscopy, etc.).
Frozen section duties include specimen retrieval and preparation of intraoperative frozen sections.
Assisting with postmortem examinations, including external examination, evisceration, selective dissections, and specimen processing.
Assisting/instructing medical students, pathology residents, and pathology fellows with gross specimens, frozen sections, and postmortem examinations.
Participation in departmental QA/QI programs. Ongoing compliance with all current hospital, state and federal regulatory agencies for all above-cited areas.
To qualify, you must have:
The knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts typically acquired through completion of a Bachelor's degree in a biological science or closely related field and two to three years of experience.
Completion of an accredited Pathologists' Assistant training program is desirable.
The analytical skills to collect information from diverse sources, apply professional principles in performing various analyses, and summarize the information and data in order to solve problems OR design relatively complex systems and programs.
The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and provide empathy in difficult interpersonal situations.
PA(ASCP) certification required.
Prior experience working with pathology trainees in an academic environment is desirable.
