Rutgers New Jersey Medical School is seeking a Specialist, Poison Information V for the New Jersey Poison Information & Education System (NJPIES). The Specialist Poison Information V provides information on poison and drugs, as well as triaging and providing consultation on care to exposed patients who call the NJPIES hotline.
Functions as a member of the team, assisting in the prompt answering of calls.
Responds to telephone calls regarding appropriate care and treatment for acute poisoning and toxic exposures.
Responds to calls on the New Jersey State AIDS/STD Hotline, providing information, resources and referrals.
Demonstrates understanding of principles of toxicology when suggesting patient management or providing poison information.
Operates the telephone system, microcomputers and peripherals and backup systems.
Assesses the severity of the calls to the poison center and decides on appropriate follow-up; obtains a complete history specific to each call.
Provides appropriate and timely follow up to ensure accuracy and competency of patient management.
Utilizes resources such as Medical Toxicologist consultants appropriately; acts within limits of skills and knowledge and accepts consultation, guidance, and direction in situations that go beyond scope of practice.
Coordinates consultants and transfers when managing complex cases.
Researches information on specific poisonings or toxic exposures requested by physicians and other persons and institutions and act as a resource for individuals who call the center requiring referrals to other agencies and health facilities.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in a health science discipline.
Candidates must be a Nurse, Pharmacist, or Physician. Successful completion of all orientation programs.
Related experience and/or education may be substituted for the requirements on a year-for-year basis.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must have a detailed knowledge of pharmaceuticals and toxicological principles and have demonstrated knowledge of HIV/AIDS/STD's, their symptoms, treatments and testing.
