The Department of Pharmacy Services at the University of Michigan Health System is seeking a special individual who can advance and optimize our efforts for continuous improvement in medication compounding to ensure safe and high quality patient care outcomes! This individual will positively affect patient care by providing direct oversight of quality improvement activities, regulatory compliance, facilities maintenance, staff education and training, and documentation related to medication compounding. The target salary range will be based on the qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
As an integral member of the Pharmacy Department Management team, the Quality Improvement Senior Technician will work closely with the Manager of Compounding Compliance, the Quality Improvement Technician Coordinator, pharmacy managers, pharmacists, and staff to assure compliance with compounding and hazardous drug handling standards. The selected individual will provide the following services:
Conduct regular, extensive audits and inspections of pharmacy compounding areas, quality assurance monitoring programs, and employees to assure compliance with regulatory requirements and departmental policies.
Track compliance and detect opportunities for increased compliance with current compounding standards.
Identify opportunities for improvement all compounding services and programs.
Collect or monitor environmental, personnel monitoring, and hazardous drug wipe samples for the purpose of assessing the state of environmental conditions, cleaning techniques, and personnel competence and adherence to departmental policies.
Participate in the incubation and assessment of media samples
Training & Operations.
Conduct orientation and training of staff as it relates to compounding.
Assist in ensuring that adequate training and regular competency assessment programs are in place to comply with required compounding programs.
Provide continuing education to individuals and groups when regulatory requirements are added, deleted, or modified.
Provide group and individual training on techniques and departmental procedures as needed.
Maintain competency in sterile product preparation by periodically participating in pharmacy sterile compounding production, including possible weekend and evening coverage as scheduled.
Regulatory compliance & oversight.
Serve as an independent and objective body for the review and assessment of compounding procedures in the organization.
Understand and keep up to date with the laws, regulations, accreditation and certification standards, and advancements related to sterile compounding.
Assist in writing technical training materials and reviewing compounding and hazardous drug policies and procedures.
Assist with ensuring pharmacy licenses, hood certification records, and other regulatory documentation are maintained and available for inspection.
Assist with the review of the compounding sections of the regulatory and accreditation readiness assessments.
Assist with regulatory visits.
Maintain lists, databases, and perform data analysis as needed to track the status of staff education and training compliance with regulatory monitoring programs.
Create compliance reports related to observational assessments and quality improvement initiatives.
Participate in pharmacy based, management committees to review compounding standards and ensure standardized procedures are used across practice sites.
Communicate with pharmacy technicians, managers, and leadership.
Graduation from high school or an equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
Certification as a Pharmacy Technician by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required.
Current license to practice as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan
Substantial experience preparing intravenous admixtures and nonsterile compounded products
Proficient computer skills (Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint, Visio) with demonstrated analytical experience and data retrieval
Outstanding attention to detail
Proficient communication (written and verbal) with proven ability to work effectively with individuals at all levels with varying backgrounds within the organization
Completion of a Pharmacy Technician training program.
Advanced certifications or training in compounding
One or more years of relevant pharmacy experience is required, experience working in a health care system.
Prior experience supervising or coordinating the work of other technicians
Prior experience performing quality assurance or regulatory audits and maintenance of associated records
“The State of Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) requires all Pharmacy Technicians to be licensed. The new regulations allow for a one-time temporary license for up to 1 year, during which time a Technician must successfully complete requirements to become certified and meet all other State of Michigan requirements for a Full Pharmacy Technician License. UMHS Pharmacy Department provides coaching and additional information to support Technicians to become certified and licensed.
Newly hired pharmacy technicians must obtain a valid Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their hire date. This can include a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License or a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License. If a technician obtains a Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License on or before their date of hire, they must obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License within 1 year of hire date or before the Temporary Michigan Pharmacy Technician License expires, whichever is sooner, in order to maintain employment. In addition, All pharmacy technicians must obtain PTCB certification within 6 months of hire date or in time to obtain a Full Michigan Pharmacy Technician License, whichever is sooner, and they must maintain their PTCB certification throughout the duration of employment at UMHS as a Pharmacy Technician.”
