Established in 2000, the PGY1 Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is one of the oldest accredited residency programs of its kind in the nation. It has a proven track record of giving new pharmacists the tools they need to be leaders and innovators in community pharmacy practice.
Realo Discount Drug Stores Inc. consists of sixteen independent community pharmacies, a specialty pharmacy, a long-term care pharmacy, and seven durable medical equipment stores located throughout eastern North Carolina. In 2016, the site recently received a grant from the Community Pharmacy Foundation to support community clinic-based disease state education program to reduce hospital readmission rates. Realo New Bern continues to provide diabetes education for the community with a DSME program that has been accredited by the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE). The site’s Diabetes Prevention Program is a Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recognized program. Realo was also an honorable mention recipient for the APhA 2016 Immunization Champion Award for a Corporation/Institution. Realo New Bern accepts one community pharmacy resident per year. The resident will spend time at several Realo locations and learn to provide traditional pharmacy services, as well as participate in innovative clinical services:
Medication therapy management
Adherence programs and packaging
Consultant pharmacy services
Compounding services including hormone replacement and veterinary compounds
Home medical and respiratory equipment
Practice management, marketing, reimbursement strategies
Community outreach and education
Pharmacy ownership, new site marketing strategies, and market appraisals
Point of Care Testing
Disease state education and management

When selecting your designations in PhORCAS, you may apply to any of our sites. You will be charged only one fee from PhORCAS, even if you apply to multiple sites within our program.
In addition to the standard information provided via PhORCAS, please be sure that your application includes:
A letter of intent specific to the site you are applying to (i.e. Moose Pharmacy, Walgreens Chapel Hill)
Three (3) references (each must complete the standard reference form; a separate letter of recommendation is not required)
A leadership statement answering the question, “What is your philosophy on leadership?” (limit 500 words)
