William W. Backus Hospital is excited to be recruiting for motivated and dedicated residents to be part of our pharmacy team.
Our PGY1 Pharmacy Residency Program builds on Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for postgraduate year 2 (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
Upon completion, our residents are qualified to practice independently or pursue specialized training with the capability and flexibility to adapt to future changes in healthcare.

The following are required longitudinal experiences:
Depending on availability, elective experiences may be available in areas such as: Infectious Diseases/Antimicrobial Stewardship, Critical Care, Psychiatry as well as others.
PGY1 Residents will be active participants in LEAN huddles, committees and project work, participate in quality improvement initiatives. PGY1 Residents will complete a teaching certificate program through the University of Connecticut and be involved in preceptor activities.
Backus residency program will participate in the ASHP Matching program.
Applications should be submitted via the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS). A complete application will include a formal letter of intent, a current Curriculum Vitae, three PhORCAS recommendations, and academic transcripts from ACPE-accredited university. An on-site interview will be required for selected applicants.

Backus Hospital is an acute care, community hospital, licensed for 213 beds, with over 70 pharmacy employees. The Department of Pharmacy Services is focused on delivering quality pharmaceutical care. The pharmacy, open 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, also services the Plainfield Emergency Care Center, with a satellite location in the Plainfield Specialty Outpatient Center (Plainfield Infusion Center), and Windham hospital.
Among the Pharmacy department’s many services and features are: computerized-provider order entry, decentralized Pyxis Profile® drug distribution, USP non-sterile and sterile compound preparation, provision of drug information and consultation, medication histories, outpatient Anticoagulation and Medication Management Clinic (at the Backus Outpatient Care Center)
Pharmacy team works collaboratively to support patient care for inpatient as well as outpatient areas (e.g. Ambulatory Medical Clinic, Plainfield Infusion Center, Backus Outpatient Care Center). Our pharmacy technicians are involved in preparation and delivery of non-sterile and sterile compounds, replenishment of automated dispensing cabinets, and provision of medication histories to name a few activities. Our pharmacists are involved in order review and verification, final preparation checks, patient care rounds, teaching and quality improvement works. Pharmacists are members of various hospital and health-system level committees.
