The PGY1 Pharmacy Residency at Emory Decatur Hospital is a 12 month program that builds upon Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
The primary emphasis is to train pharmacists who are competent and confident in providing pharmaceutical care to a broad patient population with a variety of disease states to prepare them for clinical positions in acute care settings or for pursuing further specialized training in a PGY2 residency program. These residents will train to function as an integral member of the multidisciplinary patient care team and will participate in the education of other healthcare professionals, patients, and the community on drug-related topics and safe medication use. These pharmacists will demonstrate professional maturity by showing self-initiation in dealing with practice-related problems, by self-monitoring their work, and by being committed to the advancement of the profession. At the completion of this residency program, these pharmacists will possess current and future marketable job skills. Required learning experiences include Pharmacokinetics/General Clinical, Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Neonatology, Nutrition Support, Oncology, Emergency Medicine, and Pharmacy Practice Management/Drug Policy Development. Opportunities to earn a teaching certificate and work with IPPE and APPE pharmacy students are available.
