The PGY2 pharmacy residency program in Emergency Medicine builds on the skills learned from the PGY1 pharmacy residency program. The Emergency Medicine residency offers a unique blend of independent and mentored learning so that the resident can formulate the problem-solving and communication skills necessary to design and implement pharmacotherapy regimens to a diverse patient population.
UMMMC University Campus is the only level-1 trauma center for Central MA. The University Emergency Department sees over 100,000 patients each year with an additional 40,000 seen at the Memorial campus. There are four decentralized pharmacists dedicated to the emergency department 16.5 hours per day They are responsible for responding to all codes in the department, serve as a drug information resource, and assist with toxicology consultations. In addition, they work in conjunction with the transitions of care pharmacy team to help obtain medication histories and optimize pharmacotherapy regimens for admitted patients.
Residents can undertake a number of teaching opportunities through the UMMMC Emergency Medicine and Toxicology post graduate training programs, the UMass School of Medicine and Graduate School of Nursing, and other affiliations throughout New England. Residents who successfully complete the Emergency Medicine program will be qualified for positions as a decentralized clinical pharmacy specialist, faculty members in academia, and candidates for fellowship programs. They will have the tools necessary to obtain board certification and have a positive impact on the world of pharmacy.
