The Seton Healthcare Family (SHF) Post Graduate Year One (PGY1) pharmacy residency is a twelve-month program designed to expose residents to a rich clinical environment in which they experience concentrated, yet diverse training in a variety of pharmacy practice areas. At the completion of the program, the resident will be prepared to function, with confidence, as a general clinical practitioner in an acute care setting. As an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited PGY1 program, the graduate will also be prepared to pursue a PGY2 residency. The Seton Healthcare Family (SHF) Post-Graduate Year 1 (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency Program is an accredited program and therefore adheres to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Accreditation standards for PGY1 Programs.
The SHF PGY1 Pediatric Focus Pharmacy Residency Program requires the following experiences: orientation, academic internal medicine, community internal medicine, adult critical care, adult infectious diseases, practice management, a pediatric rotation, academics and research. Residents are also required to complete at least one rotation in the community hospital setting (note: depending on rotations selected and assigned, the resident will likely complete multiple rotations in the community hospital setting).
The following elective rotations are also available: cardiac transplant, cardiology, investigational drugs, nutrition, oncology, pharmacy informatics, and pediatric psychiatry. Required and elective rotations may be repeated as an elective (in a different setting when available).
Rotations may be completed at up to 6 practice sites, including:

DSMC-UT – Dell Seton Medical Center at the University of Texas *
SMCA – Seton Medical Center Austin

Residents have several longitudinal responsibilities, including completing a research project with a final manuscript write-up for publication, administrative assignments, staffing, and monthly journal club participation. Research and leadership programming is scheduled for the residents throughout the training year.
