Aetna Medicaid is a Medicaid managed care organization focused on improving health outcomes for those we serve. We have health plans across the US. The Aetna Medicaid Managed Care Pharmacy Residents are integrated within all functions of the Pharmacy Department. Residents will develop, implement, and evaluate clinical programs and quality improvement initiatives (HEDIS and STAR measures). Residents will also gain experience in prior authorization reviews, pharmacy administration, Medicare clinical operations, P&T Committee, Interdisciplinary Team Rounds, formulary management, utilization management, health plan pharmacy benefit management, strategic economic utilization analysis, specialty pharmacy, Part D CMS regulations and State Medicaid regulations for pharmacy benefits. In addition, residents will be required to complete a residency project and attend national/regional pharmacy conferences.

The residency is structured into blocks designed to focus on specific areas of managed care practice. Learning experiences occur concurrently within the block.
Orientation Block – 3 weeks
Onboarding activities and overview of company, pharmacy organization, and health plans. Includes Medicaid and Medicare regulations.
Learning Experience: Orientation
Skills Development Block (concurrent)² – 8 weeks
This block is scheduled at the beginning of the year and is focused training on skills that can be applied to various facets of the residency and pharmacy department. Training will include prior authorization review, documentation of interventions, clinical resources, drug information services, national guidelines, creating reports, excel training, motivational interviewing, Six Sigma and LEAN.
Learning Experiences: Prior Authorization, Utilization Management- Medical Precertification Drug Review
Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Block (concurrent) – 16 weeks
Learning experiences focused on leadership at the pharmacy department and health plan level. Resident will be involved in the management of the pharmacy benefit, trends analysis, drug utilization monitoring and review operations, and special projects.
Medication Management and Quality Improvement Programs (concurrent)² – 12 weeks
Learning experiences focused on improvement of quality of care through pharmacist led initiatives. Resident will participate in interdisciplinary care team meetings, work with case management, perform medication reviews for enterprise-wide or plan specific programs, and develop and/or implement quality improvement initiatives.
