The mission of the Walgreens Local Specialty PGY1 Community Pharmacy Residency Program is to develop confident, effective and innovative community pharmacy practitioners who will advance the profession and expand the role of the pharmacist in Community and Specialty Pharmacy. Graduates of this program will be qualified to accept a variety of clinical and management positions in the community and specialty pharmacy settings. In addition, Walgreens seeks to enable residents to achieve their professional goals, become leaders within the profession, provide compassionate care for members of their communities and contribute to the Walgreen Company’s advancement in healthcare.
The residency program is conducted across four local Walgreens Specialty Pharmacies and one non-profit ambulatory care clinic in Kansas City, Missouri. These five premier pharmacy locations offer a variety of innovative clinical pharmacy services to patients who are prescribed complex therapies. The pharmacy teams service patients with many disease states including hypertension, diabetes, behavioral health, HIV, Hepatitis C, Oncology, Organ Transplant, Multiple Sclerosis, Crohn’s Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis and more. The community pharmacists at these sites work closely with providers, patients, and the community to provide optimal drug therapy for patients. In addition, residents gain insights on management issues that can affect the implementation of patient care services in the community and specialty pharmacy setting. The resident also gains experience in the delivery of clinical services, conducting research, developing management expertise, precepting students, and participating in a teaching certification class.
Residency Activities The resident will participate in the provision of patient-care services through the following:
Disease state management programs in HIV/AIDS, Oncology, Transplantation, Hepatitis C, and other Specialty Disease States
Medication therapy management, with an ongoing patient load of approximately 40 patients
Specialty Medication monitoring and follow-up
Direct to Bedside Consultations
Development of health and wellness programs
Community outreach programs
The resident will participate in the following activities that strengthen research, practice management, and educator skills:
Design and conduct a practice-based research project
Write a business plan for a new or improved service
Develop and conduct a continuous quality improvement project
Draft a collaborative practice protocol
Present research findings at appropriate regional and national professional meetings
Execute marketing strategy for the promotion of patient care services
Provide clinical instruction to student pharmacists
Opportunity to participate in the UMKC Teaching Certificate Program

Residents are eligible for Paid Time Off (PTO). Resident pharmacists may accrue approximately 15 days (120 hours) depending on average hours worked and time in position.
Doctor of Pharmacy degree from a college or school of pharmacy accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education
Missouri pharmacist license within 90 days of the start of the residency program
Submission of residency application materials to Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS)
Three professional letters of recommendation
A letter of intent explaining why you are pursuing a community pharmacy residency and what you hope to gain from the residency program
