Essential Job Duties:
The primary function of the pharmacy parallels the ultimate fourfold purpose of the NC State Veterinary Hospital: patient care, education, research, and community service. As a support service of the Hospital, the pharmacy's primary function is based on concern for patient care and education of veterinary healthcare professionals in areas of pharmacotherapy. The pharmacy staff shows the highest regard for the patients they serve by providing and ensuring effective, safe, and economic drug therapy.
This position is the Principal Investigator responsible for oversight of the VH Pharmacy Laboratory and Dispensary, meeting all the requirements for compliance with all accrediting bodies (NC State Environmental Health Services Safety Plan #720, NC Board of Pharmacy, Drug Enforcement Administration, American Animal Hospital Association). This position is responsible for planning, leading, organizing, and coordinating pharmacy operations for patient care and pharmacy support of clinical research and teaching at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine. This position develops services that provide and enhance quality patient care, while promoting fiscal responsibility in the utilization of resources. Maintains contact with other department heads, medical staff, and nursing staff to determine needs, resolve problems, improve processes, and promote safe, effective, and high quality drug therapy. This position is actively engaged in Antimicrobial Stewardship programs in the hospital. This position creates functional strategies and specific objectives for the sub-functions of the pharmacy (teaching, research, and outreach) and develops budgets/policies/procedures to support the functional infrastructure (drug distribution). Knowledge of the managed sub-functions and solid knowledge of the overall departmental function is required. This position serves as the primary liaison for local, state, and national professional organizations, particularly the North Carolina Board of Pharmacy (http://www.ncbop.org/). Manages pharmacy employees including performing annual evaluations and developing work plans. Collaborates with VH Purchasing Director to lead budget recommendations and yearly planning for all pharmacy expenditures.
This position engages directly as a principal investigator or collaboratively as a co-investigator in research efforts with the goal of dissemination of results and conclusions through publication. This position holds membership in the NC State Comparative Medicine Institute. This position must demonstrate the ability to design and conduct scientific investigations. This position serves as the primary departmental contact for pharmacy support of all pharmaceutical-related scientific investigations at the NC State CVM providing support in study design, randomization of study subjects, IRB/IACUC approval, placebo formulation, investigator blinding, and distribution of study drug. This position works closely with the College's Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory that performs research on medications in animals and drug analysis of pharmaceutical formulations. This position demonstrates training in research ethics and compliance training through Citi Certification.
This position manages the 11 pharmacy employees, collaborates with VH Purchasing Director to lead budget recommendations, and conducts yearly planning for all pharmacy expenditures.
This position engages directly in the coordination and education of post- graduate pharmacy (PharmD) and veterinary (DVM) professionals through several programs: -Residency Program Director for Post-doc Veterinary Clinical Pharmacy Residents -Instructor for DVM veterinary students in didactic and small group classes -This position also is responsible for incidental instruction of veterinary medical students, interns and residents during daily clinical activities.
This position oversees the Drug Information Center at the NC State VH Pharmacy, providing evidence-based responses to drug information queries posed by internal customers (faculty, house officers, students and staff), referring veterinarians, community pharmacists, and clients of the NC State Veterinary Hospital.
Require post-baccalaureate credentials or a bachelor's degree plus alternative or equivalent professional training and experience may be substituted for the advanced degree on an exceptional basis.
This position must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to each species served and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and intended use (companion, performance, food-producing).
